He and Sis rented a condo on the other side of the canal from our home. Charlie and Brad realized that they shared a passion for fishing. It wasn’t long before they were fishing buddies. They fished together almost every day. It didn’t matter where Charlie fished. He’d fish at the park in Cape Coral, from Brad’s boat, in the flats near Sanibel, Florida, and along the Sanibel causeway at the parks. Pretty soon we met Sis, his lovely wife. She has a heart of gold and we knew the four of us would be friends. Sis and I would “read” on the beach while Brad and Charlie fished, usually for sharks in the afternoon. We didn’t get much reading done. We would either be gabbing about our families or laughing at Charlie and Brad. Charlie was the “shark master” at the Sanibel causeway. He would hook the black tips and let anyone who wanted to, reel one in. He taught children and adults alike. We have such wonderful memories of those times. Brad and Sis would always tell Charlie to check his bait. He wouldn’t check it until he was ready to. Charlie and Brad would grade each other’s casting skills. They were pretty hard on each other, good-naturedly. I don’t know exactly when it started, but Brad and Charlie started calling each other “World’s Worst Fisherman” (WWF). Charlie would call our phone and say, “WWF2 calling WWF3” for a fishing report. That continued as long as they spoke to each other. Last spring the four of us took a bus trip with some other friends to the HardRock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. We played travel bingo on the bus. Of course the game was accompanied by good-natured ribbing, mostly between Charlie and Brad. When we reached the casino, we all went our separate ways, and decided to meet for lunch. Of course we ran into Charlie and Sis in the casino. We would compare winnings and losses. When it was time to meet the bus to go home, who do you think was missing? Charlie. We all waited and waited, but no Charlie. Finally Brad decided to go look for him. He was only gone about five minutes when Charlie sauntered over to the meeting place. No big deal! We shouldn’t have worried. Now Brad was missing! At last we were all present and accounted for. It was a great day. Charlie would send fish pictures to his son, Jay, who would post them on his web site. I haven’t met Jay in person, but after speaking to him on the phone, we realize he is a wonderful result of his two fabulous parents, Charlie and Sis. Writing this has been cathartic for me. Every day since we arrived in January, we have missed our wonderful friends, Charlie and Sis. His presence will be totally missed. But his influence and effect on us will remain etched in our memories forever! DNR will put the heavy-duty, corrugate plastic structures in two Potomac River sanctuaries in March. "One sanctuary had too much grass and another too little. When the aquatic vegetation is very thick, it inhibits the navigation options for adult bass. Too little grass means easy access for the predators that eat the young bass," said Dr. Joe Love, DNR Tidal Bass Program manager. "By diversifying bass habitat with artificial structures, we can provide the fish more places to retreat to, spawn and hide." DNR Fisheries biologists will place the structures in Concord Cove in Chicamuxen Creek and Gumtree Cove in the Nanjemoy River. During the largemouth bass spawning period, March 1 through June 15, these coves are off-limits to boating and fishing. These activities can cause adult fish to abandon their nests, leaving their offspring unprotected and vulnerable to predators. DNR will survey the effectiveness of the temporary habitat structures for the next three years. If they prove to be successful, DNR will expand the use of the structures to other similar tidal coves. https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1311.0#postid-4935&guid=4935 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1311.0#postid-4935 Re: CAM TO SHED Mon, 04 Mar 2013 19:40:59 -0500 congratulations https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1315.0#postid-4934&guid=4934 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1315.0#postid-4934 Re: Snake contest Sun, 03 Mar 2013 20:36:45 -0500 Down with the snake heads https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1315.0#postid-4933&guid=4933 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1315.0#postid-4933 Snake contest Sun, 03 Mar 2013 20:35:12 -0500 Three anglers won nearly $300 in prizes for catching and killing snakehead fish in the Maryland Department of Natural Resources' (DNR) 2012 Snakehead Contest. Through the contest, 256 anglers removed nearly 600 fish from the Potomac River system. To enter, participants shared their experiences on the Department's Angler's Log, reporting how they caught the invasive fish, where they found them, some even sharing delicious ways to prepare them. The contest ran from March 1 to November 30, 2012, with DNR choosing the winning anglers at random. Kasie Taylor won a $200 Bass Pro Shop gift card; Jerry Lester won a 2013 Maryland State Park Passport worth $75; and Les King won a 2013 fishing license donated by the Potomac River Fisheries Commission. DNR launched the contest in 2010 to monitor how far the species has spread and encourage anglers to capture and remove snakeheads from Maryland waters. The Department plans to add the snakehead to the list of species in the Volunteer Angler Survey, which uses anglers' catch data to help fisheries managers assess fish populations. For the 2013 fishing season, snakehead anglers who log their catches on the Angler's Log will be automatically entered in the Volunteer Angler Survey with the chance to win prizes. The single-species Snakehead Contest therefore, has been discontinued. The snakehead is a non-native fish species that was illegally introduced to the Potomac River. Snakeheads have thrived and expanded due to their ability to adapt to the Potomac's ecosystem, and they now occupy the Potomac River and many of its tributaries. As top predators, their negative impacts to the ecosystem and other important recreational and commercially valued fisheries could be significant. Snakeheads have also been caught in the Patuxent, Nanticoke and Wicomico rivers. https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4932&guid=4932 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4932 Re: Apples to Antlers Sun, 03 Mar 2013 19:14:41 -0500 Very Nice https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4929&guid=4929 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4929 Re: Apples to Antlers Sat, 02 Mar 2013 20:26:59 -0500 they are some bruisers! https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4928&guid=4928 https://www.huntingandfishingmaryland.com/forum/?vasthtmlaction=viewtopic&t=1312.0#postid-4928 Re: Apples to Antlers Sat, 02 Mar 2013 18:04:00 -0500 Crazy bones, very nice
