Working Birds & Striped Bass Everywhere!

Thank you very much, Dave Frazier, for your southern hospitality and for making these unforgettable fishing trips possible.

On Friday Dave was waiting for me on his Boston Whaler Outrage at the dock as I pulled into the Pt. Lookout State Park parking lot. We loaded up all light tackle equipment and other essentials needed for the 2 day trip we had planned.

It was somewhat difficult locating nice stripers in the early afternoon, but that changed when we located some working birds on the east side.

Sonar Unit Under the Birds

The majority of stripers caught during the last hour and a half of daylight were keeper size. The weather was warm, with little wind, and smooth seas. This made topwater fishing possible and the fish were taking our poppers.

Once the sun set we were moving swiftly to Dave’s summer home on the Little Wicomico River. The fall sky showed us it’s beauty on the way home.

Rich DiGiovanna joined Dave and me on Saturday. The current was ebbing during the entire morning and we landed a countless number of striped bass, where again most were over keeper size, with 4 over 30″ caught.

Most Productive Lure: ZMan, Scented JerkShadZ, in Pearl fished on jigheads from 3/4, 1, and 2 oz

Most Productive Technique: Crank-Crank, Jig-Jig – This technique jigs the lure off the bottom and up through the water columns in a jigging motion. It catches stripers on the bottom and the ones that are suspended.

From the up current side of the boat cast the lure out and let it hit the bottom. With the rod tip just above the water, jig the lure off the bottom and back down swiftly by moving the rod from 9 to 10 o’clock, then vice versa.

This technique is best accomplished by snapping the wrist rather than moving the rod with the arm. Jig the lure up off the bottom and back down to the bottom 3 times while keeping a tight line. Now take 2 cranks on the reel handle…stop…jig the lure 2 times when taking up all the slack. Do this again and again until the lure is back to the boat. If you want your
